Much has been written about Iraq. Flocks of experts regurgitating theory concepts and exotic explanations on what exactly went wrong, how we could have succeeded and who we have to blame. R. Steward gives us another perspective. One in which you can finally grasp the ordered chaos in which the country plummeted. Moreover it gives a key to understand, beyond the exaggerations and inconsistencies of the media, the developments of this seemingly never ending conflict. At last it brings the reader to question the ideological principles of intervention which fore some are still unshakable. Fluent and humorous, it surely deserves to become a classic.
It is really thrilling to have a closer look at Muslim culture and also have the kind of insider knowledge on the difficulty of setting up a temporary government. I love the passage about the dog the Tigris, and the its fate after the occupation. However, I am disappointed not to know the fate of the female fowl which was christained Larry by Rory. Could somebody kindly let me know ?
For anybody who thinks that the invasion of Iraq was justified, and that it has now become a better place, this book is a must read. Clearly and honestly it shows how The Coalition was umprepared for the chaos, confusion, bloody mindedness and vengeance that followed.This is really telling it like it is.But this book is also entertaing and ful of humour and humanity.
Unsurprisingly, moving in into a country with a complex history and society ended up in disaster, as the author illustrates by his personal anecdotes. The epilog is further clarifying things. The book was highly praised and for good reasons.
