Alle Hochsee-Segler kennen Joshua Slocum, der mit seiner "Spray" als erster Mensch einhand die Welt umegelt hat (1895-1898). Sein Logbuch wurde ein Bestseller. Geoffrey Wolff beschreibt den Werdegang Slocums als Seemann und Kapitän mit allen Höhen und Tiefen. Est ist zugleich eine Reminiszenz des zu Ende gehenden Segelschiffszeitalters. Das Buch ist auf Englisch sicherlich authentischer, weil bei einer Übertragung ins Deutsche seemännische und nautische Begriffe häufig nicht adäquat übersetzt werden. Für alle, die Joshua Slocums "Erdumseglung Ganz Allein" gelesen haben, ist the "Hard Way Around" eine Bereicherung und ein Vergnügen.
I first read Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World" about 40 years ago. Since then, I have read various works by and about Slocum, as well as the writings of passionate sailors whose imagination and energy led them to follow in the wake of the Spray. Geoffrey Wolff's objective and perceptive biography of Slocum should be read for a fuller understanding of Joshua's enduring gift to humanity."The Hard Way Around" is a superb account of Joshua Slocum's "passages" as a human being and sailor. In painting the arc of Joshua's life, Wolff documents the "way points" that guided Slocum to his remarkable solo circumnavigation. References are provided to guide readers wanting more detail of the life and times of Joshua Slocum. The net effect is that Wolff's narrative provides insight into the evolution and poetry of Joshua's masterpiece.Wolff shows us that Slocum is not a maritime Don Quixote or simply a teller of romantic sea tales. Rather, Wolff reveals Slocum to be a human being who courageously navigated tough passages and wrote a tale that can benefit each of us when the voyage around gets hard.Readers will find that Wolff does not digress into technical details of dead reckoning, lunar navigation, the pros and cons of the Spray as an ocean vessel, or the myriad of nautical skills which Slocum mastered. Since such aspects of Slocum's expertise are well addressed in other books, Wolff wisely focuses his narrative on Joshua Slocum. Overall, I love the outcome of Geoffrey Wolff's focus and will surely let its richness fill my sails again.
One of my all time favorite books is Joshua Slocum "Sailing Alone--" this book help bring the man into a better focus telling about how he got to the point that he was sailing alone--
I will read anything by and about Joshua Slocum. This was a very well done book and praise for the author. If you are a Slocum fan or a sailing fan this is great book. I loved it.
Wolff provides a solid biography of Joshua Slocum, on of my major heroes, on a par with Thoreau.
